1763 Tax List for Bladen County, NC
1755 Tax List of Cumberland County, NC
McNeills of the Bladen County Tax Lists of 1768 to 1789
1801 List of Taxable Property, Capt. Watson's District, Robeson County NC
1825 Tax List for Rockfish District of Cumberland County, NC
I stumbled upon the following NC files as I was going through some old BBS downloads-
I'm not sure who the author is and can't vouch for accuracy, but there is a lot of information to
use as a point of reference.
Bladen County, North Carolina, was formed in 1734 from New Hanover County.
This 1763 tax list is the
earliest one preserved (the next one is dated 1768),
and covered all of present-day Bladen County, all of
Robeson County (formed
1787 from Bladen), and the southwestern half of Hoke County (formed 1911
from
Cumberland and Robeson Counties). It also covered that part of Brunswick County
(formed 1764
from Bladen and New Hanover), the northwestern third, which became
The southern half of Columbus
County in 1808 (Columbus formed 1806 from Bladen
and Brunswick). Thus the persons on this 1763 tax
list may just be found on record
in five courthouses: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Hoke and Robeson.
In reading this tax list (presented here exactly as on the original), some
confusion may arise where several
taxables are listed together. Entries
such as the following are, of course, clear: "Anderson Jos. & Jno. Sykes,"
"Atkinson Henry & two sons," "Baxley Thos. & son Jho." But take, for example,
Barefield Richd. Joshua &
Nathaan Barefield & Josia." This is interpreted
as being four Barefield males, all over 16 (relationship not
stated), "Handin Wm son Isaac Cross, " should be read as William Handin (Hendon), his son
(over 16, not
named), and Isaac Cross, a total of three white polls- Howard
Jos. Hezekiah & Benj," would surely be
interpreted as Joseph Howard, Hezekiah
Howard and Benjamin Howard. However, "Hamilton Jho. Cook &
Byrne" must be
read as Jno. Hamilton, a man named Cook, and man named Byrne. There will
be instances
where it may he almost impossible to determine how to interpret
an entry. For example, "Lock David Brazewell
& lsaac Hill" could be read in
three different ways: (1) David Lock, Brazewell Lock, and lsaac Hill; (2)
David
Lock, a man named Brazewell, and Isaac Hill; (3) David Lock, Brazewell
Hill, and Isaac Hill. Make a careful
study of all multiple entries.

The names found in
this list are taken from the Bladen County Tax Lists. These lists are incomplete
lists, as some of them are
missing for whole years and/or for certain districts in certain years. The list for 1784 comes from the North Carolina Legislative
Papers, but they were printed in the Robeson County Register which is my source and are included below.
None
of this list is
transcribed by me directly from original records. I encourage you to check the original tax lists. There was only one McNeill
in the 1763 list.
