Notes: This James McNeill is surrounded by much lore, including the legend that he was stranded on an island in Canada when his ship foundered and that his wife had remarried by the time he was rescued. James was a schoolmaster and was an official (noted as James McNeill, Esq. in the minutes) of the Robeson county court in the 1810s, often presiding with one or two other influential gentlemen over court sessions. More research is needed to verify the information about this family of McNeills.
