Notes: More research needs to be done to identify more fully this Neill McNeill. I have not scoured the existing Bladen County grants for 1740, but I suspect Malcolm Fowler did which is why he believed he was a colonist. There is a strange similarity between this Neill and "Little Neill" McNeill but it ends there; and no children of "Little Neill" have ever come to light. The two were most certainly different men although they lived close to one another on Tranthams Creek opposite and just south along the CFR from the Bluff area. The two also died very close to the same time. I have a strong suspicion that this Neill on Tranthams Creek, Roger's father, was the brother of Daniel McNeill of Taynish who may have brought his two lesser brothers, Neill and Archibald, to NC with him in 1739 or who came soon after. Male-line DNA from all three men, Neill, Daniel, and Archibald, would be greatly insightful. As for our Neill's children, I believe that Harry and Henry were the same man. In the 1789 Cumberland County court minutes Neill's son Roger was declared an insolvent in Archibald Smith's district for the year 1788; the minutes show that Roger died between March and April 1789. The minutes also named his orphans, Henry and Neill though a later deed shows a much younger son, Hector, who was born in December 1785.

Wife's name unknown; she may have been a Gist. Had at least three children, Henry born 1775 and Neill born about 1777. It is shown that the youngest son Hector, born 1785, lived and went to Kentucky. Roger listed as insolvent for the year 1788 and died in Spring of 1789, per Cumberland Co. court minutes.
